Is There Such a Thing As Too Young to Take Anti-Aging Treatments?

In a world where youth are bombarded with advertisements, news reports relating to celebrities undergoing anti-aging treatments and promotions of the latest products to make you look younger, the question that has been asked as of late is: can you be too young to receive anti-aging treatments?

A new report from The NPD Group found that Generation Y women are starting to observe and even fight the signs of aging. The study titled “Women's Skincare In-Depth Consumer Report” discovered that more than one-third (39 percent) of women aged 25 to 34 said anti-aging is a cruel benefit in the products they use for facial skin care. Meanwhile, only 19 percent of women aged 18 to 24 argument that anti-aging is an important treatment.

Despite the figures being a lot higher for the older demographics, there is a growing number of young women who feel anti-aging is an important element in the skin care products that they maintain on a regular basis. Industry experts make the case that both manufacturers and retailers need to educate women from Generation Y a lot more than what they are currently doing.

“There is an opportunity for manufacturers and retailers to educate Gen Y women on facial skin care, and allowing them to sample products plays an important role not only in capturing these consumers, but turning them into loyal customers as their needs evolve,” said Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst, The NPD Group, Inc.

“Open to learning, reachable and seeking solutions, Gen Y women are a critical age group for skin care marketers to target now, as they are beginning to develop skin care regimens that are likely to follow them through the rest of their lives.”
Prevention

But is there such a thing as being too young to begin using facial cleansers, eye products and neck moisturizers in order to combat the aging process? Dr. Elizabeth L. Tanzi, co-director of the Washington, DC Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, has traditionally described a recent meeting that geneticities are the primary factor in a person's skin, such as an individual inheriting certain facial movements and expressions, and not their age .

Dr. Tanzi added that in addition to genetics, a person's environmental exposure can also play a significant factor. Some of this includes smoking, too much ultraviolet exposure, using tanning beds and playing sports outdoors, which can all contribute to heightened aging.

“I think it's more important to talk about looking youthful, energetic, and vibrant, not necessarily looking young, because we may be inadvertently delivering the wrong message – that all aging is preventable if treatments are started early enough – and that sets the stage for unrealistic expectations, “explained Dr. Tanzi.

WebMD reports, meanwhile, that young women should not focus on utilizing products but rather taking preventive measures that enhance the aging process. For instance, Adam Friedman, MD, director of dermatologic research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, told the medical outlet that youth in their 20s can wear sunscreen every day as a form of anti-aging. Other experts make a strong point of youth refraining from smoking cigarettes.

Although anti-aging creams, for example, can fight wrinkles and assist in speed cell turnover, it's still important to look after your skin when you're young, even if you feel that you're looking older in the mirror.

“Control the environmental causes of aging and, while you may see fine lines in your early 30s, you can minimize dilated blood vessels, deeper wrinkles, and loss of elasticity into your late 40s or 50s,” noted Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at New York's Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

Healthy Skin Is a Healthy You

A lot of people do not realize that our skin is the largest organ of our body. The health of your skin is one of the most important aspects to leading a long, healthy lifestyle because it protects you from daily contact with harmful bacteria, viruses, the sun's rays and other dangerous elements.

On the other hand, healthy skin can generate vitamin D when exposed to the sun – an important vitamin for the body's functions – and can assist in maintaining a healthy body temperature. Also, healthy skin can help us react to changes in our immediate environment through the feelings of pain and pressure.

Due to these circumstances, it's crucial to take proper care of your skin. It's great that we cleanse our bodies through showers and baths, soap and body wash, but is there more we can do to improve the health of our skin and fight the aging process? Of course! And it does not require spending hundreds of dollars.

There are various suggestions that industry professionals have in skin care endeavors: protection from the sun through sunscreens and protective clothing, do not smoke, treat skin gently, eating a healthy and nutritious diet and properly manage stress.

Although these are common sense, inexpensive and dependable methods, one growing trend in the world of skin care and beauty is the adoption of mud masks (also known as facial mud masks).

For those in the know, there are numerous variations of facial masks, such as cucumber, cactus, light therapy and glycolic. It seems, however, a lot of beauticians and health experts are recommending mud masks because they are mined from regions where there are no contaminants, an important aspect to skin care health since we constantly touch chemicals.

How do they work? Mud masks remove dirt and oil from your pores, while also exfoliating skin and eradicating dead skin cells. In addition, many acne patients have begun to use clay masks because oil and dead skin cells clog pores and are the leading causes of acne. What should be stated is that many are enhancing the mud mask experience too.

It was reported that mud masks are being combined with other natural ingredients. For instance, there are articles suggesting adding honey to mud masks, while other experts recommend buying mud masks that have aloe vera, witch hazel and jojoba oil. Most of these mud masks contain anti-bacterial ingredients that can definitely make your skin look and feel better.

Aside from improving your skin health, applying facial masks is also soothing, calming and relaxing!

Here are some tips to using a face mask:

– When you have the mask applied, lie down on the sofa with your feet up and relax for 10 to 15 minutes doing absolutely nothing.
– Choose an old wash cloth or rag, soak it in warm water and cover it on your face (be sure to allow the cloth to absorb the mud).
– Use a separate wet cloth to completely remove the mask.
– Massage your skin for five minutes.
– To really improve the skin, it is best to do this a few times a week for two to three weeks.

Finding Good Solutions For Anti-Aging

Who wants to get old? Virtually no one. Yet aging is a fact of life. No one can keep living and escape it. Only those who leave this life prematurely through the unfavorable ravages of illness or accident can avoid the pitfalls of aging. People often say that growing old beats the alternative, but that may not be the case depending on the quality of life achieved.

An important part of the anti-aging process is to try and stay younger. Although the years will pass, good health should be maintained as much and as long as possible. Good health and wellness are available for most people, but it is certainly not a guarantee of life and longevity. The body and mind will wear out as senior citizens well know. However, keeping as healthy as possible is a good goal for anyone to have.

There are some methods which may be used as good solutions in the fight against old age. Some of these are:

1. Keep the body active and healthy by doing daily exercise
2. Keep the mind active and alert by reading, playing puzzles such as crosswords, being aware of current affairs, writing letters or emails to friends and family
3. Meditate
4. Do some type of volunteer service for friends or strangers
5. Find and use products which could be beneficial for anti-aging

Exercising is not an easy thing to do for most senior citizens. However, there are some forms of exercise which may be helpful while not taking a lot of effort. There are a number of exercises which are specifically geared for the older body which do not require a lot of strain and effort. Walking has long been known to be an excellent source of exercise which could be easy for most people because it generally does not require any special or expensive equipment. Getting out in the sun helps people get vitamin D to keep the bones stronger.

Keeping the mind active should be a fairly simple matter. Many senior citizens have more time on their hands than anything else. Reading and keeping up on current affairs can help the mind stay alert and active. Playing puzzles which require thinking could help. Even watching television can be helpful if it keeps the mind active. Staying in touch with family and friends through letters or emails can bring more happiness and well being into a person's life. Taking some time out for meditation has found to be beneficial. Doing volunteer service benefits the receiver and also the giver. Finding a home based business could help a person feel useful as well as possibly bring in some needed extra money.

Many types of vitamins and health supplements are on the market to aid in the anti-aging efforts. Finding products which help a person feel better may be a boon to becoming older. There are lots of solutions which can help in anti-aging. Finding them and putting them into practice and use could help people improve the quality of life as they age.

Most of the Japanese Americans and immigrants from Japan who were forcibly removed from their west coast homes and incarcerated in camps during World War II have become senior citizens or have left this earth. Those who were already old in the camps had problems with the aging process. They did not have much opportunity for exercise and the food was not very agreeable to their taste. They suffered greatly from their imprimementment because being active in body and mind is the best way to combat the problems which come with aging.

Myths And Facts About Botox

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures ever since it was first introduced more than ten years ago, but despite its global acceptance, it is also perhaps the most misunderstood one.

While it's easy to get seduced with the promises of turning back the years and getting back your youngger face literally over night, many who are intrigued by this cosmetic procedure are still held back from taking the plunge with the myths surrounding Botox and its use.

Some fear that they will end up with a “face freeze”, the notice that probably originated from seeing too many stars and starlets in the media, sporting a perpetual dear-in-the-headlights look. With their faces frozen in a perpetual surprise, it seems like they themselves can not believe how far they went with their Botox use and abuse.

The truth is that – when properly administrated – Botox will preserve your normal facial expressions, only smoothing out the frown lines and wrinkles.

Botox was approved by the FDA specifically for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (called glabellar lines or “the 11” because they resemble that number), but is often used “off label” for other wrinkles. Botox is there before used for smoothing out crow's feet (lines around the eye), forehead lines, skin bands on the neck, lines around the mouth (“smoker's lines”), for turning up “mouth frowns”, for arching the flatted eyesbrows – and the list goes on and on.

Those starlets with their strangely arched eyebrows may simply be the victims of using Botox injections in a way they were never intended to be used. Properly administrated Botox injections will smooth out the forehead while preserving the natural arch of your eyebrows.

Using Botox is not supposed to make you look “fake” or “plastic”. Of course, one should know when enough is enough: that's a lesson that clearly eluded all those expressionless starlets.

Many are afraid of using Botox because “it's a toxin”. While Botox is indeed produced from the potential lethal botulinum bacteria, the concentration of the toxin in Botox is so low, that – when properly administrated by a certified professional – there's no way for a toxin to somehow spread outside of the tiny area where it is injected.

Since Botox is commonly administrated via injections directly to the muscle, being afraid that the procedure will be painful is understandable. However, what you can expect to feel is more like a burning sensation or a slight irritation. While bruising on the skin may occur, it will typically clear in a few days.

The notice that “anyone” can administrator Botox injection is a dangerous myth. Only a trained clinician can properly and safely administer Botox injections in a way that will leave you satisfied with your new appearance. Botox “mills”, salons, mall shops, are not the places to get Botox. “Botox parties” are just a stupid and potentially harmful idea. You will probably leave from those places looking awkward, if not disfigured.

A qualified clinician will know what is the right dose of Botox to use to get the desired results, and which muscles to target precisely to achieve it. He will not leave you with a complete muscle paralysis that prevails any facial expression for a distressingly long period of time, unlike some needle-wielding amateur.

You may have heard the tales of women (and men) liking their new smooth foreheads so much, that they had become addicted to Botox. It's easy to dismiss that kind of stories, but this one may not be only a myth. You can become addicted to virtually anything that makes you feel good: if applying Botox makes you feel great because it works so well, but it actually wears off – you can become psychologically addicted to the procedure to keep experiencing those feelings. A “real” physical addiction to Botox is not possible.

In the end, despite its proven efficiency, Botox is not a panacea for all wrinkles, furrows and creases. Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses and thus relaxing the muscle contractions which eases out wrinkles. Because of its specific targeting of wrinkles caused by the overly tense muscles, there is no logic in using Botox to treat those wrinkles caused by the sun damage and gravity.

NRF-2 and Cell Signaling Pathways

Every so often, a new product comes on the market that has aggressive promise when it comes to fighting aging and disease. However, in the past many supplements are proven to be ineffective or simply dangerous in some instances. Recently, there has been a lot of research done on a dietary supplement known as NRF-2 Activator, which is a promising antioxidant and anti-aging ingredient now found in several different products. This product has the ability to address cell signaling pathways, reducing the potential for free radical damage.

What is an NRF-2 Activator?

The cell signaling pathways serve to regulate the production of various molecules within the body that create natural antioxidant activities. These pathways tend to get blocked in older individuals, and those who have compromised immune systems. With an NRF-2 Activator, your antioxidant production will increase and they will be more able to fight the free radicals that are causing the natural aging process.

What Kind Of Results Should You Expect With An NRF-2 Activator?

Most people find that with continued use, and NRF-2 supplement can help to increase overall health, reduce inflammation and pain, and even help them lose weight in some instances. Although this is not considered to be a weight loss product, the fact that it is able to promote antioxidant production and the way antioxidants travel down the cell signaling pathways, it can increase fat oxidation.

But, the success of NRF-2 Activator really has more to do with the long-term effects of the additional antioxidants and the way that it is able to reduce free radical damage that is commonly to blame for such issues as heart disease, Parkinson's disease , Alzheimer's, and other diseases and illnesses commonly found in older individuals.

A high quality NRF-2 product can also help to reduce inflammation, reduce pain caused by inflammation, and act as a natural body detoxification product. This can help to reduce the build-up of toxins in the gastrointestinal system as well.

Who Should Not Be Taking An NRF-2 Activator?

It should be said that with any kind of nutritional supplement, it is always wise to talk to a medical practitioner or at least a pharmacist before using. NRF-2 Activator should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, or individuals who are taking blood thinners such as Coumadin or warfarin. Also, those who are undergoing cancer treatment should not take this product without talking to a doctor first.

Can an NRF-2 Activator Help You?

If you are like most people and you are looking for every way you can feel and look younger and maintain your healthy lifestyle for as long as possible, then the addition of an NRF-2 Activator may be able to help you fight off some of the signs of aging. By taking advantage of the power of cell signaling pathway technology, you will be doing all you can to put up the good fight against the passing of time.

What Is an NRF-2 Activator?

It sees as if we are all looking for natural ways to remain living healthier throughout all of our years, and one of the secrets in doing that is to be found in antioxidants. Nutritional supplements that provide antioxidant support have been more popular than ever before, and one of the most unique types of products that helps provide antioxidant support as well as other health benefits is what is known as an NRF-2 Activator.

What is an NRF-2 Activator?

This is a natural protein that is found in the body naturally, but is reduced in quantity and quality as we age. As a result of this, having an NRF-2 activator in your daily nutritional supplements can help to slow down the aging process and actually provide other health benefits that you will not find with other supplements.

This protein is able to move from the cell nuclear this and bond with your DNA in a way that makes it responsive to all human cells. In many ways, an NRF-2 activator makes existing antioxidants more powerful in the way that they fight free radicals that cause disease and aging.

How can an NRF-2 Activator help you?

Even though you can not find some foods that can contain NRF-2 Activators, it is very difficult to eat the amount of proper food you would need for this protein to be increase in your body. As a result, an NRF-2 Activator can help to fight aging, inflammation, pain, and the natural oxidative stress that is a part of normal life.

In addition to this being used as a natural anti-aging ingredient, many people are now using these types of activators as a way to detoxify the organs, and there is recent research that shows that a high-quality NRF-2 Activator can protect against various brain related diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and age-related dementia.

Is this kind of supplement right for you?

Before you take any kind of nutritional supplement, it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor first. Especially if you suffer from existing health conditions or you are taking prescription medications, then it makes perfect sense to ensure that you are healthy enough to be using a supplement. But, the research on NRF-2 Activators shows that this is a safe and very beneficial product for most people to be taking, and one that can help to reduce many of the signs of aging and free radical damage.

Where can you purchase a NRF-2 Activator?

Because the science behind this product is still evolving, it can be difficult to find the supplement in stores. As a result, you may want to look online where there are now several reputable brands available. When you purchase any supplement of this kind, it is always wise to make sure the product is produced in the United States in an FDA approved facility. By doing so, you will be sure to get the highest quality ingredients and a product that is made by a company that will stand behind your purchase.

Exercising Is Important for Senior Citizens

There are many anti-aging products on the market today to help with trying to stay younger looking and feeling better, but one of the most important things to do is to keep physically fit in body and mind.

One of the questions generally asked by doctors of patients who come to them for physical exams or office visits is: “Do you exercise regularly?” Many senior citizens are not ready to exercise and must answer no. It is not something they enjoy or to which they are committed. Most know that it is something they should do, but they have not made it a priority in their lives. Although exercising is important for senior citizens just as it is for younger people, many older adults are not doing it.

Exercise and fitness centers are full of trim and fit youngger adults who are committed to keeping their bodies in shape. People are interested in staying and looking younger even though they are constantly growing older. Some people seem to really enjoy the stimulation from exercise and how it makes their bodies feel. However, few senior citizens and severely overweight people are found in such places.

If you have ever watched the inspirational television show called “The Biggest Loser,” you could see that exercise is an extremely important part of losing weight and becoming healthier. Although the amount and kind of food a person ingests into his body largely determines the benefits or consequences derived, exercise remains a vital element of staying fit.

As the years advance, it remains necessary to keep your body in motion as stated in commercials for various products. Walking has been touted as a very beneficial and easy to accomplish form of exercise. Swimming is also considered to be excellent despite many people do not know how to swim whereas walking is available to almost everyone without any special equipment.

Although some senior citizens may be exercising in public places such as fitness centers or walking around shopping malls, many may be doing some form of exercise in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. This is easily accomplished by watching exercise shows on television or putting in a video. These will not be of any benefit unless the person is conscientious in doing the exercises along with the instructor on the screen. There are programs which are geared specifically for older people, women, or other groups.

People may have purchased exercise equipment to be used at home. This has become a big business as more people have become interested in staying fit in recent years. There are many types of equipment which can be used with success, but they will not work unless they are put to use on a regular basis.

Numerous cosmetic type of anti-aging products are on the market to help people look visibly younger, but they have little value without a body which is at least somewhat fit and healthy. Finding products to fight the aging process may be beneficial, but exercising and staying in shape are vital to a healthy lifestyle even as people grow older. Exercising is important for senior citizens, but it is also advisable to seek out and use products which may be beneficial as a person grows older such as vitamins, calcium, and supplements for anti-aging. Eating right is also of utmost value and importance.

Taking care of one's health including exercising is important at any age. Products to help in this area are available at Amazon as well as other areas.

Paper Thin Skin Treatment – Does It Cause Cancer?

Since we came out of our mother's womb, we've had a suit-like casing around our bodies called “skin”. Referred to scientifically as the “epidermis”, it provides us with protection as it acts as our first line of defense against cuts, falls, and other harmful accidents.

But there are many of us that have a thinner layer of protection making us vulnerable to even the slightest of scrapes. Have you even noticed little bumps on your skin? Without notice will you have a nasty breeze on your skin? Well if you said yes to any of these questions you more than likely have what is referred to as “paper thin skin”.

Genetics, aging, sun exposure, and even certain topical or oral medications can cause paper-thin skin. It is important to treat the skin with Vitamin A to add thickness, wear longsleeve shirts and pants to protect the skin, and keep the skin moisturized.

Here are some natural ingredients to help your thin skin become thicker, smoother and stronger without producing negative cells that could cause cancer.

LifeSirt

LifeSirt is an ingredient extracted from the leaf of the Mediterranean myrtle plant, revitalizes and nourishes skin cells so skin looks younger and more radiant.

Micro-X6 Peptide

Micro-X6 Peptide helps repair the appearance of past damage. Also minerals Copper and Zinc play a key role in cell re-growth. When cells grow healthy, they also become thicker. Eating fruits and vegetables that contain these minerals is one huge way you can combat paper thin skin. You can also take a daily multivitamin that contains these two minerals.

African Baobab

African Baobab fruit extract, acerola cherry, and other botanicals provide superb skin protection. The extract has Vitamins A, D, E, and F that are quickly absorbed by your skin. It leaves no greasy feel to your skin, which is great. It is used to treat dry, damaged skin by regenerating your skin cells and increasing skin elasticity. According to the National Geographic blog , the African Boabab “contains six times as much vitamin C as oranges, twice as much calcium as milk, and plenty of B vitamins, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, and antioxidants.” This fruit extract is seen as a cure-all tonic and a superfruit.

Omega 3 Fish Oil

Another naturally powerful supplement is Omega 3 Fish Oil. This oil contains many anti-oxidants and free radicals that have been known to reduce chances of many diseases. Not only does it contain anti-oxidants, but it also contains lycopene extract which naturally thickens skin.

There is no dosage for Omega 3 Fish Oil. It is recommended to eat fish at least two times a week. Coldwater fish such as salmon and tuna contain fish oils. Please keep in mind that some fish have a higher level of mercury, such as tuna and mackerel. Foods such as walnuts, soybeans, and tofu contain Omega 3 Fish Oil.

Water Exercise: When It Hurts Too Much to Move

The golden-aged women taking a water-aerobics class at the local natatorium already know the benefits of water exercise. When traditional land-based exercises are not possible due to pain, muscle strain, osteoporosis, arthritis or other physical challenges, water exercise can help to improve your quality of life. Individuals with high blood pressure and / or diabetes are often advised to participate in aquatic exercises to better manage their disease. For many people, water exercise alone fulfills fitness goals and for some aquatic exercise facilitates a safe return to land-based exercises.

Water exercise does not necessarily mean sign up for a water-aerobic class – it can be done independently or under the care of a physical therapist. It's a good idea to make sure physical therapy in the pool is covered under your insurance plan.

The local natatorium keeps the water cool for swimming lessons, high school swim practice and swim meets, but during open swim hours individuals can jump in and exercise, or sign up for a class through the YMCA. Water therapies, however, have to be done in a heated pool, between 90-94 degrees, and are typically located in facilities that offer physical therapy. Check to see if classes or open swim times are available to the public.

Water exercise can accommodate all levels of fitness and is an excellent cardiovascular workout, but keep in mind that it may not be as beneficial for building bone strength. Water does provide resistance for muscle strengthening and conditioning, but the buoyancy of the water reduces weight bearing which is necessary for building bone strength.

The resistance and support provided by the buoyancy of the water allows individuals to exercise with less pain, and the relaxing sound of being in the water adds enjoyment. For those able to access therapeutic temperatures feel the immediate comfort of the warmth in their joints and muscle tension is soothed. Stretching and movement becomes much easier, and it is common knowledge that a body in motion stays in motion.

You can simulate most exercises that can be done in a gym or on land in the pool. For instance, instead of walking on a treadmill you can walk laps in the pool. Sometimes people use water shoes so they do not slip. You can perform many types of stretches and you can even use buoyant weights.

In addition to providing physical benefits, water exercise can improve mental health. Swimming and exercising in the water can improve your mood and give you a feeling of well-being. It can decrease anxiety. Countless studies show that exercising can help improve your mood.

Water therapy has also been shown to be good for children with behavioral problems and is a good family activity.

Chronic pain can be debilitating, but try not to get discouraged. If you have not tried water therapy, this may be what you need to do. If you had not thought about water therapy before, this may be an instance when taking some advice from your elders may really provide a lasting benefit.

How To Add Fun To Growing Old

At an event I spoke at recently, I was espousing the multi-benefits of the 5Fs (Fitness, Food, Friendship, Future, and Finances) towards leading a longer, better life. A ninety-two year old in the audience reckoned that there should be a 6th F – FUN. She identified regular doses of fun as a major contributor to her longevity. Since my response that FUN is generally considered to be linked to Friendships and associated relationships, she was not convinced and maintained that there should be 6Fs.

Her position in relation to FUN got me thinking. Away from the crowd, I googled 'Fun & Ageing'. My search did not deliver much. I found plenty about Fitness, Food, Finances (particularly, how much you need to have enough stashed away for a rainy day), Future (as in always having something to look forward to), and Friendship, but zit about putting some fun into growing old.

This absence got me thinking. It's yesterday's news that two-thirds of people who ever lived past 65 years are alive today. So, for a large, and increasing, number of people, longevity is a new chapter in life. Yet, the focus of much of research is more on survival than how to get the most from this new chapter – including, of course, how to have fun.

On further reflection, I thought what I do for fun.

  • I have fun going for a run. (My wife prefers swimming.)
  • I have fun catching up with others at the club. (Groucho Marx would not join a club that would have him as a member.)
  • I have fun playing with my grandkids. (A friend of mine reckons George Burns got it right when he advocated having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family – in another city.)

And the list goes on and on. We're all different. What one person finds fun may not appeal to another. So, there can be no one recipe for how to have fun.

Fun involves attitude, and attitude is a choice. You can have fun if you choose to, and conversely. Some attitudinal questions could include:

  • Is it FUN to be alive? (If not, choose to do something about it.)
  • Am I a FUN person to be with? (If not, choose to do something about it.)
  • Am I receiving my daily dose of FUN? (If not, choose to do something about it.)
  • Am I getting FUN out of being in my current group? (If not, choose to do something about it.)

We know that choosing attitudes (and goals) motivates towards taking some action. It's only then that success can be achieved (namely, progressing from where you are to where you want to be). Success, of course, is an essential precursor to leading a satisfying life. So, if you want to have fun in your life, it will involve making a choice (or choices).

If you'd like to explore further adding some fun to your life, Google 'Fun Theory'. The gist of The Fun Theory is that if you want to change behavior, make it fun: when people start having fun, their behavior is likely to change. Not only will you be entertained by the examples but also see how having fun can be catching: having fun can even create fun for others.

Time’s Up! Time Management And Ageing.

We are fascinated by time. We borrow it, waste it, spend it, find it, take it, and sometimes even charge for it. You have found the time to read this, others can give us a hard time, we hurry to get the shop before closing time arriving in the nick of time, and daylight saving time is the only form of time travel most of us will experience . We're even aware that our lives have a time limit (men approximately 600,000 hours and women 700,000). And the demands of everyday life can be so time-consuming that there's no time left to do the things that we'd really like to do. We can run out of time to enjoy time.

Time, of course, is a human construct: it did not exist until we invented it. So there are many observations that continue to be made about this 'thing'.

Time, for example, does seem to speed up and slow down. Time taken traveling seems to go much slower than time spent when we arrive at the destination. Boring meetings and dull conversations seem to go on forever. And clock-watchers at work wish time would speed up and put an end to their misery. We're even prepared to pay significantly different prices for the same thing in different circumstances: timing is everything.

The debate about time speeding up as we age continues to get air-play. Annual events seem to come around more quickly as we age. Charles Schultz told us that, 'Once you're over the hill, you begin to pick up speed'. Gandhi observed that, '… as we grow older the clock runs faster and we lower'. And English novelist, playright, and broadcaster, JB Priestly, attributed time of acceleration with age because a year is a much smaller fraction of an older person's life than it is of a child's. Alas, in clock time, the years go by at exactly the same speed as always.

That often-quoted Anonymous said, 'We do not have all the time we need because we do not know how much time we have'. So, if his or her observation is correct, enjoying the moment seems like a good idea.

Given that time is part of everyday life for most of us, it comes as no surprise to find that one of the big demand areas is how to manage it (time, that is). As we've seen, what people mean by 'time' can differ significantly. The challenge, therefore, is to identify the specific type of time management required. This could include getting yourself (or someone else) organized, ending procrastination, setting priorities, using the telephone and social media effectively, handling drop-in visitors, and so on. Effective management of time can become the great enabler.

Boost Your Protection Against Alzheimer’s

Using mice bred to develop symptoms mimicking Alzheimer's disease, the researchers present the first evidence that caffeine coffee offers protection against the memory-robbing disease that is not possible with other caffeine-containing beverages or decaffeinated coffee.

Previous observational studies in humans reported that daily coffee / caffeine in take during mid-life and in older age decreases the risk of Alzheimer's disease. The researchers' earlier studies in Alzheimer's mice indicated that caffeine was significantly the ingredient in coffee that provides this protection because it decrees brain production of the abnormal protein beta-amyloid, which is thought to cause the disease.

The new study does not diminish the importance of caffeine to protect against Alzheimer's. Rather it shows that caffeine induced induces an increase in blood levels of a growth factor called GCSF (granulocyte colony stimulating factor). GCSF is a substance greatly reduced in patients with Alzheimer's disease and demonstrated to improve memory in Alzheimer's mice. A just-completed clinical trial at the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute is investigating GCSF treatment to prevent full-blown Alzheimer's in patients with mild cognitive impairment, a condition precedenting the disease. The results of that trial are currently being evaluated and should be known soon.

“Caffeinated coffee provides a natural increase in blood GCSF levels,” said lead author Dr. Chuanhai Cao. There is a synergistic interaction between caffeine and some mystery component of coffee that provides this beneficial increase in blood GCSF levels.

The researchers would like to identify this yet unknown component so that coffee and other beverages could be enriched with it to provide long-term protection against Alzheimer's.

In their study, the researchers compared the effects of caffeine and decaffeinated coffee to those of caffeine alone. In both Alzheimer's mice and normal mice, treatment with caffeine coffee significantly increased blood levels of GCSF; either caffeine alone or decaffeinated coffee provided this effect. The researchers caution that, since they used only “drip” coffee in their studies, they do not know whether “instant” caffeine coffee would provide the same GCSF response.

The boost in GCSF levels is important, because the researchers also reported that long-term treatment with coffee (but not decaffeinated coffee) enhances memory in Alzheimer's mice. Higher blood GCSF levels due to coffee intake were associated with better memory. The researchers identified three ways that GCSF seemed to improve memory performance in the Alzheimer's mice. First, GCSF recruits stem cells from bone marrow to enter the brain and remove the harmful beta-amyloid protein that initiates the disease. GCSF also creates new connections between brain cells and increases the birth of new neurons in the brain.

“All three mechanisms could complement caffeine's ability to suppress beta amyloid production in the brain” Dr. Cao said, “Together these actions appear to give coffee an amazing potential to protect against Alzheimer's – but only if you drink moderate amounts of caffeine coffee.”

Although the present study was performed in Alzheimer's mice, the researchers indicated that they've attended clinical evidence of caffeine / coffee's ability to protect humans against Alzheimer's and will soon publish those findings.

Coffee is safe for most Americans to consume in the moderate amounts (4 to 5 cups a day) that appear necessary to protect against Alzheimer's disease. The researchers previously reported this level of coffee / caffeineine taken was needed to counteract the brain pathology and memory impairment in Alzheimer's mice. The average American drinks 1 to to 2 cups of coffee a day, considerably less than the amount the researchers believe protects against Alzheimer's.

“No synthetic drugs have yet been developed to treat the underlying Alzheimer's disease process” said Dr. Gary Arendash, the study's other lead author. “We see no reason why an inherently natural product such coffee can not be more beneficial and safer than medicines, especially to protect against a disease that takes decades to become apprehensive after it starts in the brain.”

The researchers believe that moderate daily coffee intake starting at least by middle age (30s – 50s) is optimal for providing protection against Alzheimer's disease, although starting even in older age appears protective from their studies. “We are not saying that daily moderate coffee consumption will completely protect people from getting Alzheimer's disease,” Dr. Cao said. “However, we do believe that moderate coffee consumption can appreciably reduce your risk of this dreaded disease or delay its sunset.”

The researchers conclude that coffee is the best source of caffeine to counteract the cognitive decline of Alzheimer's because its yet unidentified component synergizes with caffeine to increase blood GCSF levels. Other sources of caffeine, such as carbonated drinks, energy drinks, and tea, would not provide the same level of protection against Alzheimer's as coffee, they said.

Coffee also contains many ingredients other than caffeine that potentially offer cognitive benefits against Alzheimer's disease. “The average American gets most of their daily antioxidants intake through coffee,” Dr. Cao said. “Coffee is high in anti-inflammatory compounds that also may provide protective benefits against Alzheimer's disease.” An increasing body of scientific literature indicating that moderate consumption of coffee decrees the risk of several diseases of aging, including Parkinson's disease, Type II diabetes and stroke. Just within the last few months, new studies have reported that drinking coffee in moderation may also significantly reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancers.

“Now is the time to aggressively pursue the protective benefits of coffee against Alzheimer's disease,” Dr. Arendash said. “Hopefully, the coffee industry will soon become an active partner with Alzheimer's researchers to find the protective ingredient in coffee and concentrate it in dietary sources.”

New Alzheimer's diagnostic guidelines, now encompassing the full continuum of the disease from no overt symptoms to mild impairment to clear cognitive decline, could double the number of Americans with some form of the disease to more than 10 million. With the baby-boomer generation entering older age, these numbers will climb even more without an effective preventive measure is identified.

“Because Alzheimer's starts in the brain several decades before it is diagnosed, any protective therapy would obviously need to be taken for decades,” Dr. Cao said. “We believe moderate daily consumption of caffeine coffee is the best current option for long-term protection against Alzheimer's memory loss. effects for most of us. ”

According to the researchers, no other Alzheimer's therapy being developed comes close to meeting all these criteria.

“Aside from coffee, two other lifestyle choices – physical and cognitive activity – appear to reduce the risk of dementia. Combining regular physical and mental exercise with moderate coffee consumption would seem to be an excellent multi-faceted approach to reducing risk or delaying Alzheimer's, “Dr. Arendash said. “With pharmaceutical companies spending millions of dollars trying to develop drugs against Alzheimer's disease, there may very well be an effective preventive right under our noses every morning – caffeine coffee.”

Natural Methods Vs Prescription Drugs

Everyone seems to be interested in looking and staying younger than the years which may have accumulated. As people age, their bodies naturally change and even begin to deteriorate.

Recently I received an email which directed a specific drug which was being marketed to women with claims of preventing dementia and reducing issues which affect women as they grow older. Of course, it was advised that women talk to their doctor about whether or not they should use the prescription drug.

There was a caveat that the drug contains ingredients which may raise your chance of getting cancer or to possibly have a heart attack, stroke, or blood clots. If you have any of a number of certain conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, migraine headaches, or other problems such as heart, liver, thyroid, kidney, or other concerns, you should avoid the drug.

Some of the serious side effects which could come as a result of using the drug surrounding heart attack, stroke, cancer, and blood clots mentioned above are high pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease, liver problems, increased weight, and leg pain. It also states that these are not all the possible side effects as other problems may result from use of the drug.

When you see commercials on television for various prescription drugs for all manner of ills, they must mention the possible side effects which could even include death. The prescription drugs seem scary to ingest into one's system.

However, prescription drugs are prescribed by health care professionals everyday for all manner of ailments. They have their place and do a wonderful job of improving the quality of life for countless individuals. They also have made a very lucrative business for the companies which dispense the medications. These prescription drugs must be approved by the Federal Drug Administration before broad distribution so they are deemed to be reliably safe (although the possible side effects are numerous and stated in their advertising).

In contrast to the wide variety of prescription medications for every kind of ailment, there are so called natural products on the marketplace as well. The shelves of drug and grocery stores have many of these products available. The companies often have special large packaging for wholesale discount member stores. It is a huge business involving trillions of dollars as people are concerned with fighting the effects of health related problems and aging.

Many of the natural products which profess to have possible health benefits which are not allowed to make medical claims are sold through the avenue of network marketing (multi-level marketing or MLM) where people can purchase the products as customers or join the business as a distributor to buy and share the products with the potential of earning some money along the way. People must weigh the pros and cons of a product on their own to determine which method and product to choose. It is often worth a careful investigation to find products which will be beneficial to the individual. Non-prescription items are often available at the Amazon store.
