1. Do your tasks with a twist of variety . Avoid sitting too long or standing for excessive periods of time. If your job entails facing the computer for the workday, take breaks, and do some walking or stretching exercises that increase blood flow and bring life to your legs and feet.

2. Do not be a couch potato. Sure, you deserve those breaks on weekends. It is time to just relax in the comfort of your couch. By doing that same thing all day long, however, you are making yourself more susceptible to spider veins. Why not engage in a DIY project at home and move around the house? You can also spend your weekend on a cleaning project or a gardening hobby. If you feel like you can spare some time, go and be part of community activities. Doing so not only lets you flex your muscles to get rid of spider veins; it also allows you to socialize and contribute to society.

3. Work out. Exercising is always good for you. It keeps you fit and radiant. If you are still starting out and feel ready for the gym, work out at home either on your own or using an equipment. You may start with biking. Do you need motivation? Work out with a partner. Make sure you get your blood circulating to avoid spider veins and achieve overall health.

4. Ditch driving and choose to walk. If the grocery shop is just a few meters away from your home, you can run errands or purchase personal stuff without the car. Online shopping gives you convenience, but you can set that for later and get moving for now for healthier blood flow.

5. Massage your legs. After a long day at work, you may be tempted to lie lazily on your couch or bed. The better action to take first is to massage your legs. Give your feet some TLC to get the blood flowing and prevent spider veins from appearing.

As with ensuring that you are physically healthy, preventing spider veins from crowding your legs is possible with eating the right food, getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water. Remember that the all your efforts being active go in vain without the right healthy habits.

Where Can Botox Be Used?

Some have called it the miracle treatment. Others consider it a must have for anyone with fine lines and wrinkles. Still others swear by its ability to take years off of one's appearance. Plastic surgeons everywhere have been administering Botox injections to their patients for a number of years. Due to how successful the drug is for achieving its intended effects, there is little wonder why more and more people are deciding to have this type of cosmetic work done on their bodies.

The key toxin in Botox is used to stop nerve communication to the brain. Thus, the injection site is essentially made to be dormant, which in effect neutralizes the muscles that cause wrinkles when they contract. In theory, the drug can be used anywhere, but given the potential risk of permanent nerve damage; there are a few areas where it should be avoided. It should also be noted that Botox is not fix-all solution and should not be thought of as such. Like any form of plastic surgery, it requires a suitable patient to minimizeize potential complications.   • The neck; This is one area where many people do not even think to have an injection, but it could very well work out in your favor, especially if you have predominant neck bands. These are the caused by the loosing of the muscle on the neck, which occurs periodically over time. A quick dose of Botox can restore the muscle's firmness to its former state, causing the bands to disappear.

Living in the Terrestrial Vehicle – Your Body

For most of my life, I was numb. I lived disassociated from my body numbed by fear, tension, alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, and addiction to thinking. Being a speech pathologist, I worked with people who had strokes, were brain damaged from trauma, were autistic, and other brain dysfunction. The thought of having a “stroke” was terrifying for me.

Was my decision to quit smoking an action to do my part in ward off the possibility of having a stroke? OR was I experiencing what the twelve step program called … A Spiritual Awakening ?! Whatever it was, I made the decision. I wanted to “be” a non-smoker.

How to give up smoking? I had tried 20+ times before and failed miserably. Quitting smoking has been compared to giving up cocaine and heroin since nicotine is considered as addictive as these illegal drugs. The advice was – give up everything and anything that you associate with a cigarette. So, in October of 1982, I gave up alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, friends who smoked (temporarily, places where smoking was allowed, and substituted M & M's for them all.

Two weeks within my process of quitting, I identified severe asthma and debilitating migraines. During the next year, I demonstrated four herniated disks. I could only walk for 5 minutes before having to sit, allowing my spinal vertebrae to realign. Not numbered by daily doses of alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine, I realized that I had a body, one that was in excruciating pain most of the time. I became a pain pill junkie and ate sugar as if it were the basis of a nutritious diet. I had found new ways to numb out and disassociate from the body. I looked thin and emaciated.

After the pain, I did not give up my campaign to quit smoking. This is a quote from the March 20, 1987 article in the New York Times titled, Nicotine: Harder To Kick Than … Heroin …
“W hen the first warnings about tobacco were published more than 20 years ago, many experts thought that smoking was '' no different than compulsive potato chip eating, '' says Dr. Henningfield. it is now clear, according to Dr. Henningfield, that smoking is a subset of compulsive behavior in which the controlling factor, nicotine, substantially affects the smoker's central nervous system, producing pleasurable effects, dependency and, when it is taken away, withdrawal. “

Due to my rebellious personality, I knew that if I felt “stripped”, I would probably fail in my efforts to quit smoking. With that in mind, I carried a pack of cigarettes and a lighter with me at all times during the first year of withdrawal from smoking. When a craving hit, I could decide to have a cigarette or not have a cigarette since it was readily available. Sometimes, I would delay my choice for just an hour. Thinking “I can have a cigarette in an hour” would mollify the temptation. After that hour, I would make another choice despite delaying having a cigarette for a couple of hours. Within a month, I was able to delay for a day. “I can have a cigarette tomorrow” would be my refusal.

Twelve Step mottos also assisted me. Just For Today I will be cigarette free. One day at a time is a familiar mantra for many addicts. I would repeat these mottos over and over in my head until the craving subsided.

What I did not know was that in giving up alcohol, and not entering a recovery program, I never changed my cognitive dysfunction from what is called “stinking thinking.”

  • All-or-Non Thinking . I thought in extremes, in black and white categories, no middle ground. I thought in never, always, have to, need to … which reflected in anxiety and depression.
  • Overgeneralization – My thinking was stuck in an early stage of mental development corresponding to when I began drinking alcohol … age 15. I saw a single negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat with life becoming one lousy thing after another.
  • Mental Filter: I developed “selective hearing” where I focused on a tiny part, usually negative, of what I was hearing, and believing that part rather than looking at the whole picture.
  • Disqualifying the Positive -I rejected positive experiences insisting they “do not count” because the rest of my life I judged as a miserable pile of doo-doo.
  • Jumping to Conclusions – I interpreted (without definite facts), my inaccurate concluding that people had it in for me and that everything would turn out miserably.
  • Magnification (catastrophizing) or Minimization: I exaggerated the importance of things. My thinking was irrational. This is sometimes called the binocular effect.
  • Emotional Reasoning: “I feel it, therefore it must be true”. The person starts to think that emotions are facts. “I feel therefore it is”. “I feel like she hates me, therefore she does”.
  • SHOULD Statements: I've tried to motivate myself (usually with a hangover) by should and shouldn'ts trying to control not only myself but others. I'd whip and punish myself with criticism.
  • A Distinction between Shame AND Guilt: I felt ashamed of myself … ashamed of who I was being as a human … ashamed of my essence. Guilt is feeling sorry for what I've done .. Guilt does not last a long time. I can apologize and forgive myself. Shame lasts and lasts and lasts and is frequently labeled guilt.
  • LABELING AND MISLABELING: This is an extreme form of over generalization . Instead of describing the action, I'll attach a long list o negative labels to myself … “I'm a loser”. “I'm ugly”.
  • PERSONALIZATION: I'd see myself “as the cause” of things I absolutely had no control over. I was self-centered, self-absorbed, and even to the point of narcissistic. This stems from emotional numbness and chemically delayed emotional development (age 15 for me).

Unbeknownst to me, I had become a “dry drunk”. This is someone who gives up alcohol without recovering from all the dysfunction associated with the addictive dis-ease. Despite giving cigarettes and alcohol, my life was still filled with negative drama. My thinking was stinking. I was unhappy, frustrated, and in despair.

I went to see a psychiatrist. She recommended that I enter a 30 day rehabilitation program where I was actually diagnosed as an alcoholic, “a dry drunk” with a core dis-ease of “codependence”. I began unraveling a history of emotional incest, fanatical religiosity, parental and personal alcoholism and a pervasive dislike of being alive. As I faced and slowly deal with issue after issue, I began experiencing living in my body more than ever before. There were even a few times when I found living in my body to be pleasurable. Very few.

I studied to become a Massage Therapist. I actually turned to massage because I could not tolerate my body being touched. I actually was not that fond of touching others either. I was determined to shift these patterns into pleasurable experiences.

Since I still could not stand at a massage table, my clients lay on a massage cushion on the floor so I could sit and slide around while giving a massage. My décor was Asian and the mood was meditative which created a great deal of out-of-body experiences. I was still unconsciously determined to stay out of the body as much as possible, now under the guise of meditative massage.

In the expansion of my business in massage, I became an instructor approved by the Texas Department of Health and founded The School of Massage and Miracles. I focused on becoming more conscious and studied ways of living more fully in my body. I was assisted by a phenomenally devoted desire to unravel automatic programs and assist my students in doing the same. It was enlivening.

I learned how to ground myself by focusing on my feet. I learned this technique from Hospice. When a person is in the process of dying, if you touch their feet, it helps them come back into their body from the twilight zone between living and dying. Using grounding frequently throughout the day, my hands and feet which were usually cold, began to warm up.

I learned how to breathe fully as I get and received massage. I took courses that increased my awareness of my body such as eating “mindfully”. NO TALKING while eating. What a concept. I became fully engaged in the smell, texture, and taste of the food I was eating. It was a rush of pleasurable sensations that I continue to experience while dining.

Receiving and giving massage shifted many of my life experiences into ones that I appreciated and felt the pleasure of gratitude.

I pioneered massage. I was one of the first massage therapists in the country to do massage in a doctor's office, an office of a chiropractor, in a physical therapy practice, and actually received staff privileges in a hospital, which was a professional feat.

Thirty two years sober from alcohol and cigarettes. As I walk with my older dog Trinity, I certainly focus on walking mindfully and being aware of the gifts nature allows me to choose to enjoy or ignore. I frequently choose to stay present in my body rather than allowing my mind to chatter about what I “need to” do today. The songs of birds. The hoot of an owl. The tat tat tat of a woodpecker. The buzz of bees. The rustle of leaves on the trees. I delight “going out of my mind” and being in my body. As a added bonus, being fully emboided is anti-aging.

Our Historic Obsession of Youth and Beauty

Today the cosmetics industry is a multi-billion pound giant that continues to create new methods of anti-aging protection across a wide range of products. Critics say these cosmetics have made modern society a wonderful place where people prize physical appearance in ways like never before, but in reality the quest for achieving an ever more youthful and radiant complexion has always been part of life.

The obsession of using cosmetics to gain a perfect appearance began as far back as ancient Egypt when natural ingredients, such as herbs, minerals and olive oils, were mixed together in concoctions which were then applied to the skin of the upper class elite who were able to afford such luxuries.

Perhaps the most well-known quest of obtaining youthful looks belong to the myth of the 'Elixir of Life', a legend that many civilizations have followed which dictates the notion of a secret ingredient that will lead people to the 'fountain of youth' a metaphoric term that will free them from mortality and generate eternal life in those who consume it.

Of course these beliefs all occurred long before scientific research enlightened us into realizing that the aging process is an unavoidable part of the genetic makeup of all living creatures, but in many ways even after centuries of science we have not really moved beyond the primitive obsession with perfect looks, as we are still trying to find ways to stay youthful, ironically often using ingredients that were adopted for ancient cosmetics.

However, there was some method in the ancient madness. The use of natural ingredients is certainly a positive way to treat sking conditions and has been scientifically proven to not prevent but make aging less noticeable.

Anti-aging creams have the ability to reduce several facial changes that occur with age, rarely the sagging effect skin has called 'laxity', and the process of 'rhytids', commonly known as wrinkles. Other facial imperfections that anti-aging cosmetics can treat includes the red inflammation of the skin called 'erythema' and the yellowing colouration medically known as 'solar elastosis' which is often caused by excessive sun exposure.

The effects of anti-aging cosmetics are challenged by many scientists and doctors, and others simply believe that they are a place designed to defraud consumers, but time and again scientific studies such as those carried out by Manchester University in 2012, have proven the benefits of such products and how they can restore confidence and self-respect to people who are insecure about their looks.

As a society, our obsession with the quest for obtaining youthful appearances is far from over. It may be just as much a part of our DNA as the aging process itself.

It’s Your Choice: Participate or Perish

If things have not always worked out as you thought they would, you're not Robinson Crusoe. Consider, for example, ageing. While you may never have spent too much time thinking about it, in the blink of an eye you've gone from feeling bulletproof to being aware of your vulnerability. You're old before you know it becomes the philosophical response. While our stories may differ, things may not have gone as planned.

William Goldman is considered to be one of the world's leading plays. Goldman is probably better known for his works than he is. ( Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men are just two of many.) After his accomplishments, Goldman once commented about Hollywood, 'Nobody knows anything about movies'. The same is true for most things – life and aging, for example.

There are lots of people who have lots to say about ageing. As active participants in it, our views and stories should not be downplayed.

While there's no research to back up Bette Midler's claim that 'After 30 a body has a mind of its own', we do know that after we hit 40 the body starts aging faster than normal.

Studies have shown that, without the proper nutrients and exercise, the body will age about 6 months extra for every year that passes. If this is so, by the time we reach 60, we will look and feel 70 years old.

The good news is that it is possible to slow the aging process, enabling us to look, feel, and move younger than our chronological age.

The chances are pretty good that you already know what to do: you just have to do it. The 5F s ( F itness, F ood, Friendship, Future, F inances) will help you on both fronts.

  • When it comes to fitness, keep in mind that you do not have to become a gym junkie. Gyms can be very social places and the cardio is good, but cardiovascular condition can be gained with far less time and effort. Fitness does not need to involve seemingly endless cardio sessions. Do not overdo it and certainly do not stress.
  • Food is important. There's heaps (never on your plate, I hope) of information recommend low-fat, high-fat, and high-protein diets, good and bad cholesterol, and so on, and on, and on. Most of this conflicting information will help to worry you to death. No one should know your body better than you do. By all means read, listen to what others say, but quite, you're in the driver's seat of your life.
  • Be selective about friendship. Choose to be around people who are positive. People who are constantly talking about growing old, all their aches and pains and how life is down hill after 40 should be given the flick. It may be old news but the quality of the information (people, TV, movies, reading materials, etc.) we expose ourselves to has been shown to affect our health.
  • Surround yourself with people looking forward to a challenge – a future. A challenge helps to keep you young and what better challenge could there be, taking control of your health and body?
  • Making sure the buck stays with you makes good financial sense. And there's a plethora of information about how to do this. If someone else's view is important, try Confucius' from approximately 500 BCE. While Confucius is attributed with lots of sayings that were not his, he did say, 'If you know what is enough, then you will have enough. But if you wait until you have enough, you will never have enough '.

For now, heed the advice of Phillip Adams: 'If you must stare blankly at something, I suggest brief bursts at the mirror. That will serve to remind you of the transience of life and how you'd better get on and not waste it '.
