How to Beat Aging (2) – With Micro-Nutrients

You get your energy through a process called oxidation , which is similar to what happens in a fire but at a much slower rate. Oxidation, like fire, damages surrounding tissues, and the higher the rate of oxidation, the greater the damage.

The damage from oxidation correlates with the negative effects of aging. For example, it is not the amount of cholesterol you have that causes cardiovascular disease but the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that protect your biological systems from the ravages of oxidation. But the long and harder you live, the more you overwhelm you natural antioxidant systems, so you need to give these a boost with nutritional supplements.

As well as damaging surrounding tissues, oxidation creates free radicals when energy is produced. Free radicals are fragments of oxygen.

Thus oxidation results in further shortening of the telomeres, driving the aging process.

As discussed in a previous article How to Beat Aging (1) , vitamin C is the only substance that has been shown to preserve telomeres. But vitamin C also:

  • fights free radicals before they do damage
  • helps maintains body structure by being an important ingredient in collagen, the main structural protein of your connective tissues
  • helps the immune system by stimulating antibodies
  • helps the nervous system by contributing to the production of the amino acids that regulate that system; and
  • helps the breakdown of histamines, the inflammatory elements of allergic reactions

Your body does not produce its own vitamin C so you have to ingest it in the food you eat.

You can get your minimum daily requirement from food alone. But to get enough for the anti-aging effect you need to take the massive doses mentioned in How to Beat Aging (1) … several thousand milligrams per day.

Vitamin A

Adequate vitamin A is very important for maintaining a healthy and youthful body.

Indeed it is considered essential for good eyesight (which is always under threat especially if you are diabetic) by:

  • preventing damage to the eye from free radicals (which cause night blindness) and
  • lowering the risk of macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in the elderly.

Vitamin A supports your immune system which decrees your risk of lung and breast cancer. It also plays a key role in keeping your skin, hair and nails healthy.

Vitamin A is found in meat, liver, milk, eggs, carrots and spinach. As a diabetic following the beating-diabetes diet, you will not be eating any milk or eggs and will be eating only the leanest of meats. Vitamin E

It should be noted that too much of one tocopherol in the body can prevent the absorption of the other tocopherols. Thus your vitamin E supplement should contain a mixture of the four tocopherols and the four tocotrienols.

The recommendation is 400 IU of vitamin E a day.

Alpha lipoic acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) plays a vital part in the production of cellular energy.

ALA is one of the most effective fighters of free radicals. Indeed it is unique because it can fight free radicals in both the oil and water areas of cells … which is why it is sometimes called the 'universal antioxidant'.

Lutein

Lutein is a carotenoid, a pigmented nutrient that is responsible for the yellow colors of fruits and vegetables.

Lutein protects you vision by neutralizing free radicals in the lens and retina. It also filters sunlight in order to prevent damage to the macula, the region of the retina that is responsible for your central vision; ie, it acts like sunglasses.

You're born with a certain amount of lutein in your eye, but your body does not reproduce it. Without adequate consumption, the amount of lutein in the eye may become depleted with age.

It also reduces the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease by preventing the free radical damage that contributes to these diseases.

Since your body does not make lutein, you must constantly replace it through the foods you eat. It is present in the highest quantities in dark, leafy green vegetables, red grapes, egg yolks, squash, peas and oranges.

However these sources do not provide the 6mg a day recommended as a minimum by leading doctors and a supplement is highly recommended. For anti-aging purposes a dosage of 20mg of lutein a day is recommended.

Lycopene

Lycopene is a bright red pigment that is found in your liver, bloodstream, adrenal glands, lungs, prostate, colon, and skin at higher levels than other similar pigments.

In animal studies, lycopene has been found to have antioxidant effects and may also block the growth of cancer cells. Studies on human subjects suggest that eating lycopene-rich foods or having high levels of lycopene in the body may:

  • prevent coronary artery disease by preventing the oxidation of LDH (bad) cholesterol;
  • reduce the risk of prostate and pancreatic cancer by fighting damage from free radicals; and
  • reduce the risk of age-related eye disorders such as macular degeneration by neutralizing free radicals in the eye.

However, the amount of lycopene ingested in these studies was based on eating tomatoes, not on taking lycopene supplements. Since tomatoes also contain other nutrients, such as vitamin C and potassium, the potential benefits of lycopene alone can not be ascertained with certainty.

As well as tomatoes, Lycopene is found in other red fruits such as guava, peppers, watermelon and pink grapefruit. In addition to eating these regularly, anti-aging specialists recommend 20mg of lycopene as a supplement every day.

Note re antioxidants

You can get most of these micro-nutrients from food. However to get them in sufficient quantities to be effective as antioxidants, you need to take them as supplements.

With the exception of vitamin C, all these antioxidants are fat soluble so they are best taken with during a meal with a little oil or fat. Take them in the form of gel capsules.

How To Avoid Feeling Let Down

In the world of business, we were told that if you wanted referrals that there were only four things that you had to do:

  1. Arrive on time
  2. Do as you say
  3. Finish what you start
  4. Say please and thank you

Failure to deliver on any one of these behaviors guaranteed zit referrals and possible expulsion from the workplace, salt mine, or fun factory.

If you've lived long enough, you'll know that these four qualities – being punctual, reliable, reliable, and appreciative – have applications for most areas of life, including growing old and aging.

For most people, being punctual is big deal. Nothing, it sees, cheeses them off more than waiting around for someone to show their face. And, one of my pet hates is when someone fails to deliver on what they had undertaken to do: I invariably feel let down. Then there are those people who seem to model their behavior on the grasshopper, flitting from one task to the next without completing any of their tasks. By their actions, these people prove to be complete waste of time. And, surely, there should never be an excuse for bad manners, particularly expressing one's appreciation?

But what if someone (outside of the workplace) fails to deliver on one or more of these qualities?

Cassius's words to Brutus ( Julius Caesar I, ii) echoes loud and clear, here, when he said, 'The fault … is not in our stars, but in ourselves'. The problem is ours: it's our expectations that need to change. I can expect someone to have in a certain way, and when they do not I might become upset. Unfulfilled expectations can cause unnecessary hassles, stress, even conflicts. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable, or I may have not made clear what my expectations were, or I may not have clarified my expectations, or whatever. The 'offending' person may never know that his or her behavior was the cause of my upset-ness (except I tell him or her, of course).

As we age, our expectations might change. And, when (hopefully) wisdom finally arrives, we have taught that expecting others to be in a certain way could be setting ourselves up for disappointment. It sure can be tough accepting that the key issue may be my expectation (s).

The next time something (or someone) does not live up to your expectation (s), remember Robert Frost's observation about life: 'It goes on'.

5 Secrets to Living Longer and Staying Youthful

Looking good is something we all want to achieve. Many women (and men) spend hours in the morning grooming and polishing themselves. Indeed, many will not even step outside the front door unless they have put their 'face' on first!

Get this; through a woman's life, she will spend on average a whopping £ 100,000 on beauty products, whilst a man of around 30 years old will spend roughly £ 100 per month on grooming and preening himself.

What does that tell us? Well, we love to look beautiful of course! But what does beauty mean and do we really need to spend six figures? If we added up the amount we sent on beauty products, I can almost guarantee any of it would include food or supplements.

You have heard the quotes “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “beauty is only skin deep” but there is more to the concept of beauty than that, but I do not really want to get into the history here. The aim here is to look at it from another angle. Its less about the make up, but based on the promise that beauty starts from within.

As we know, we need to feed our bodies in order to live our day-to-day lives. We need to food for energy, restoration and building. We also know that when we feed our bodies CRAP food – food unrecognizable to our body, we increase acidity. In other words, the body becomes unbalanced. More 'free radicals' are created and as a result, that causes rapid aging (as well as other health issues). The aging process is also advanced through the use of medication, pesticides, preservatives, smoking, alcohol, sugar, car fumes and toxins in our everyday environment.

There is not a lot we can do about the vehicles on the road belting out black fumes or factories, throwing out toxic wastes in our water, but there is much we can do decrease our exposure and increase longevity and youthful looks.

Of course, do stick to your normal beauty time (like you would have stopped!), But you may find that if you also look after your insides as well, you might just find you are being completed before make-up even goes anywhere near your face! I'm not showing here but I get called young lady often. Example: I was passing a stall in Brixton, South London one summer when someone called out from behind the table and asked if I wanted to sign the petition on pension reforms … he quickly said, “I know you are young but it will affect you ever “. I had to smile because unbeknown to him, I'm closer to pension age than he thought! 🙂

You see, looking after yourself from within, you slow down the rate at which you age resulting in a youthful glow. Its also important to have a child like, playful outlook on life and not think about age. We all grow old, that's inevitable, but there is a lot we can do to stay 'young'.

1) Stay Active – I can not emphasize how important it is to keep active. According to a recent 12 year study, people who keep fit or active for at least 60 – 140 minutes per week reduced their risk of death by 30%. This means you do not have to workout hard. Something gentle works too! Just get moving!

2) Eat for Beauty – This is MY fave subject and I could go on about it all day. We all know it but I'll say it until I'm blue in the face (not possible but hey you never know …), a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, quality fats and fish can help expand your lifespan by years ! Your body is so forgiving, which means its never to late to turn things around but you must start now. Nutrition is the golden key. I would rather spend £ 600 on a brand new shiny kitchen appliance than a pair of designer shoes. Shoes will hurt my feet, where a juicer will add years to my life – massive difference. Alkalizing wholefoods will help your body clear out the crap and give you a natural energy high.

3) Get some Sleep – If you are a chronic insomniac, I sympathize. I used to be like that but not anymore. In fact, I found my secret to quality sleep back in November 2014. Not getting enough sleep is linked to excessive aging according to a US study. The study showed females who lacked quality sleep had an increase of fine lines and wrinkles *. We are provided to sleep around 8 hours each night but we are all different – some of us need all those hours and more, while others (such as myself) are good on less than that. The key here is to work out the amount of sleep that's good for you. If you can not sleep and you have tried everything, I can guarantee, there is something you still have not tried!

* Its likely this study was conducted on ladies of 'European' origin. Black and African skin does not tend to show fine lines and wrinkles.

4) Do not get Stressed – Easier said than done. We all go through stressful periods but sometimes the stress can hang around far too long to the point where it causes digestive issues such as IBS. Do not under estimate how stressed you are, even if you think you are not. Walking round with constant stress is aging you and can lead to heart disease, stroke or anxiety.

Deal with stress through relaxation. Yoga (my favorite way of de-stressing) or you can meditate or go swimming … as long as you relax. Also what ever is causing the stress, deal with it!

5) Supplement – Good quality supplements based on wholefoods are beneficial even if you are eating a good diet. In a concentrated form, they deliver much needed phyotnutrients and anti-oxidants directly to the blood stream (once digested of course) so even the worst digestive systems, will benefit. When I was a teenager, my friends and I spent time in the sun with baby oil mixed with iodine, reflectors and absolutely no sun protection! We wanted tanned skin. I was even envious of the girls who had time to get the really dark tan!

Today, we know that the sun can damage our skin immediately and long term. To help understand why this is important and what happens, you must understand the type of UV rays. There are 2 types of UV rays that reach the earth and damage skin. 1. UVB Rays and 2. UVA rays.

UVB – Burning Rays

Think of the “B” as “Burning”

UVB rays are the burning rays that damage the skin immediately. The result of the UVB rays is a sunburn – an immediate result of sun damage. The damage is to the epidermis, the top layer of the skin, where the shooter UVB rays strike. Get Your Facts Straight

Beware! Often what is presented to us may not be all it's cracked up to be. Wikipedia, for example, can be a useful source of information and a good first-stop shop, but it should not be relied upon, only. So, too, information (research, even) that is cited out of context.

A great deal of what is presented about aging and adding years to our life and life to our years, for example, has been 'borrowed' from economies and focuses on the bottom-line benefits. We could be excused for thinking that we're homo economicus andnot homo sapiens.

Most of what is published on getting enough sleep and exercise, and maintaining reasonable hours, has focused on things such as achieving even more, increasing productivity, making fewer mistakes, improving communication, and so on. It's all about economics. For us oldies, many of what have exited the salt mine for the last time, this continued devotion to work can leave us feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

This is not to say that a good night's sleep is not important, and that regular exercise is not essential for living a longer, better life, but we must ask where the research is from and is related to growing old.

When it comes to adding years to our life and life to our years, there are five things we can rely on. Let's call them the 5Fs .

The Aging Brain (And What To Do)

Have you noticed small perceptual changes as a result of your aging brain? We are all concerned about losing our mental abilities as we age. It's no surprise that the rate of decline is correlated to certain aspects of our physical health. Cognition is a broad term that includes comprehension, memory, judgment and reasoning. This includes learning, decision-making, and language skills. These are skills of intelligence that we have used all our lives and taken for granted. Cognitive impairment can occur at any age, but I'm referring to Age Related Cognitive Decline or ARCD.

A normal function of aging is that brain brain neurons shrink and die. One of the primary reasons for this is oxidative stress, or an imbalance between reactive oxygen and the body's ability to detoxify itself. Oxidative stress figures into Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and ARCD.

Chronic systemic inflammation caused by cigarette smoking, poor diet, insomnia, and obesity allows irritants to enter the brain. This inflammation causes a delay in reaction time and memory impairment. If you still smoke, preserving your mental functions is yet another important reason why you must stop.

Obesity and diabetes have a surprising effect on brain function. There are a number of studies that conclude that body weights increase, brain size decrees , which leads to reduced cognitive abilities. There is a relationship between BMI (body mass index) and brain volume deficits in the brain. Childhood or midlife obesity can be a predictor of later life dementia. INFLAMMATION: The most important thing you can do for your brain and overall health is to not smoke. Make a list of all the anti-inflammation foods beginning with your breakfast. Green tea, cloves and ginger are high on this list. It's best to avoid fatty, sugary, and salty junk foods.

YOUR WEIGHT: Being over-weight causes so many health problems in addition to a shaving brain. Obviously, a healthy diet with restricted calories paired with a good exercise plan is essential. I used to teach the psychology of eating in a weight reduction clinic, so I know that being involved in an organized program with social support is the most helpful.

MENTAL ACTIVITY: Physical activity pumps fresh oxygen into your brain and improvements memory. Social activity exercises our cognition and produces endorphins. Mental exercise of establishing new neural pathways is another fun part of improving your mental abilities. You can enjoy doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, Sudoku, solve some math problems or do any other new or challenging activity that you enjoy. Hearing Loss: The California Stem Cell Program Fights Back

Think for a moment about your favorite sounds …

Now imagine those sounds gone forever, leaving only perpetual silence …

Deep inside the inner ear, inside the snail-shaped cochlea, are tiny organs with hair-like tips. Immersed in liquid, these hair cells (HC) transmit vibrations to the brain, which interpret those vibrations as sound.

We are born with a finite number of these cells, perhaps twenty thousand in each ear. As these die off – through old age, chemical poison, disease, or the blast of noise– our hearing diminishes. Lose enough hair cells, and we join the millions who are deaf.

The humble chicken can regrow its haircells; so can the silver dollar-sized zebrafish.

But not us.

Hearing aids provide a limited degree of help, as do cochlear implants: these are better than nothing. But to regain the full range of hearing, the subtlety and grandeur of sound? That is forever denied us.

Or maybe not.

At Stanford, Stefan Heller and Alan Cheng are using stem cell research to fight hearing loss, each from very different angles.

Dr. Cheng hopes for progress with another source of hair cell. The utricle, a tiny organ inside the cochlea, is the center of balance, and gravity awareness. When the elevator floor drops out from underneath you, or when the fighter pilot swerves his jet, the utricle warns you. It has hair cells (HC) very similar to those which give us hearing, but with a critical difference: for a short time, these hair cells regenerate.

Cheng hopes to take tissues from the utricle and see if they can be encouraged to grow hair cells for hearing. Perhaps the signals which turn on the process during early growth can be turned on again.

But what if we could simply grow a few million hair cells, developed from embryonic stem cells?

Dr. Stefan Heller has been working on this simple-sounding but very complicated task for more than ten years.

Both scientists have received grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM, the California stem cell program), and are the recipients of numerous awards. Their lives are dedicated to the long struggle: the fight against deafness.

Advice For Living: Live Modestly Within Your Means

It's tough times in Greece these days. It seems that today's Greeks have not taken on board many of the lessons of the past when the ancient Greeks knew a thing or three about living a longer, better life. And the wisdom of their offerings contain some valuable lessons as we age.

The Temple of Apollo at Delphi carried the inscriptions (warnings, if you prefer): 'Nothing in excess' and 'Know yourself'. Socrates, Plato, Epicurus, and Aristophanes, are just some of the legendary figures who borrowed from, and built, on these warnings.

As these legends shown, those two Delphic warnings, located in the ante-chamber in which one waited before going in to keep one's appointment with Apollo's channeler, were cautionary advice against self-delusion. Nothing in excess is a warning against overdoing things – living modestly, within your means. And examples of knowing (and not deluding) yourself could include kidding oneself about how rich one was, about one's physical attractiveness, thinking oneself more handsome and tall than one really was, and thinking oneself more virtuous and wiser than one really was. (Think Shakespeare's Richard III for this latter one. )

There are two key messages that can be drawn from these famous warnings.

1. We are our own best advocates, determined to believe the best about ourselves.

If you've ever tried to change your own behavior – diet, exercise, being judgmental – you'll agree with me (and Plato), that change of any kind can be tough going. Without there's a crisis, changing ourselves or others can be a real challenge.

The good news is that the ancient Greeks told us what to do: we just have to do it!

2. Excess and overreaching are a constant danger and must be avoided at all cost.

Today's society seems to encourage excess rather than voluntary austerity as was the case in many areas of ancient Greek society. Everything now seems to have to be BIG – houses, helpings, expectations. And there's plenty of self-help literature that seems to encourage this continued overreaching. If you live long enough, hopefully you'll become even more balanced causing self-delusion to disappear. Avoiding excess and getting to know the real you will, therefore, come with age.

It's up to you to make sure that you do not die wondering.

Heed the warnings: less is enough.

How to Beat Aging (1)

In my previous article How and Why We Age , I explained that aging is the process by which we typically weak and lose function as we grow older.

That we should lose the energy, strength and resistance to disease we had when we were young seems strange because our bodies are constantly renewing them through section cell division. It seems, unfortunately, that they can only do this about 50 to 60 times after which they die.

The reason our cells do not divide clearly is because each time they divide their telomeres get shorter. Telomeres are repetitive strands of DNA found at the ends of chromosome pairs within cells. Their purpose is to protect the chromosomes.

Each time a cell divides a portion of the telomere at the end of the chromosome pair is lost. So each new generation of cells has slightly shorter telomeres than its parent.

As the telomere shortens, the behavior of the cell slows down. The signals that control the output of hormones and the immune function become weaker. The cells start to act old.

As more and more cells start acting old, the body deteriorates. Sometimes it can defend itself no longer and succumbs to disease.

This is why older people are more susceptible to disease than younger people and indeed suffer from a wide range of debilitating medical conditions.

So how can we prevent our telomeres from shortening (or, at least, reduce the rate at which they are shortening) and so postpone the aging which is our future lot?

There are three things that can help:

  • regular injections of telomerase
  • gaining control over homocysteine ​​levels
  • taking massive doses of vitamin C on a daily basis

Injections of telomerase

Telomerase is a protein that is capable of producing new telomeres on the ends of chromosomes in aging cells, ie it can prolong the lives of cells.

Actually, telomerase is found in all cells. Normally however it is turned off, ie it is not active.

It would seem that should active telomerase be added to normal cells, these cells should continue to replicate beyond their allotted 50 to 60 cell divisions.

The patent for telomerase is owned by Geron Corporation, a biotechnology company. Geron have found out how to rebuild aging telomere to lengths that are typical of youngger cells.

To do so they extract a molecule called TA-65 from a Chinese herb called astragalus. TA-65 activates the gene that makes telomerase.

TA-65 seems to work. In one study, cells to which telomerase had been introduced replicated at least 20 more times than they normally would.

In another study, a group of men between the ages of 60 and 85 were given concentrated extracts of telomerase. After six months the men showed remarkable changes with improved immune strength, significantly improved eyesight, better sex lives, and more youthful and radiant skin.

In order to lengthen telomeres significantly a 12-month course of injections of TA-65 is required. Only a very few clinics are offering this in the USA and the cost for most people would be prohibitive.

If you can not afford injections of TA-65 to reverse the loss of telomeres, there is plenty of other things you can do to slow the shortening of your telomeres.

Controlling homocysteine ​​levels

Homocysteine is an amino acid that accumulates in the tissues.

High levels of homocysteine ​​in your bloodstream have been correlated with the most common degenerative diseases of aging, such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and impotence.

This is not surprising as researchers have discovered that high levels of homocysteine ​​triple the amount of telomere lost during cell division, ie they speed up the rate at which you age threefold.

Yet, correcting this is a simple matter.

Your doctor can measure homocysteine ​​with a simple blood test. If the amount you have in your bloodstream is high, you can correct it easily with these vitamins:

  • Vitamin B12 500mcg per day
  • Folic acid 800mcg per day
  • Vitamin B6 25mg per day
  • Riboflavin (B2) 25mg per day
  • TMG (trimethylglycine) 500mg per day

Note that these dosages exceed the usual recommended doses many times over.

Massive doses of vitamin C

Vitamin C is the only substance that has been shown to preserve telomeres.

In 1998 a Japanese study discovered that raising the level of vitamin C in cells could slow down the loss of telomeres by up to 62%.

However, to slow the loss of telomeres and get an anti-aging benefit, you need to take massive doses of vitamin C, at least 500mg about twice a day. Indeed, a dosage of 1,000 to 2,000mg twice a day is recommended.

Other anti-aging ploys

There are plenty of more things you can do to slow down the rate at which you age.

These include making sure you get plenty of antioxidants in the form of dietary vitamins and minerals, reducing the amount of food you eat, building up your muscles, reducing your stress, and so on. These will be discussed in future articles.

General studies on longevity are evaluated as are studies that target specific conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer or aging skin. I have subscribed to the magazine for many years because I appreciate their scientific approach and their ultimate goal of life extension. As a result, recommendations made after a convincing study have caused me to improve my diet or change my behavior.
