Growing Older – Happy and Healthy

Nobody stays young forever – a fact well known by everyone, and feared by all.

It does not have to be that way I am realizing, now that I myself am growing into a more mature stage of life.

Instead of fearing getting older, I have the intention of enjoying life as I never have been able to in the past decades.

Think of all the time you have to yourself, no responsibilities in raising kids or working five days a week and finding the weekends all too short to fully relax.

Just consider how wonderful it can be to do things at your own pace, especially those things you always wanted to do but never found the time.

You could travel if you enjoy discovering new places or how about growing more of your own vegetables? But there is one very important activity I would like to mention here, and that is exercise!

This is the most crucial issue you MUST never neglect! Never stop moving, choosing to walk or stretch or whatever you prefer but do not let your muscles get inactive. Always remember: Keep moving even though you are not in the mood to do so.

Other ways of being a happy and healthy person is to choose a hobby.

Do not underestimate the importance of entertaining a hobby. If it be painting or creating a puzzle, solving a crossword or any craft of your choice.

A hobby can be very fulfilling giving you much joy and a feeling of accomplishment. I have seen many people who think television is the only way to save them from loneliness or of passing their time and it makes me very sad.

I have known a woman who loved to create birthday cards with dried flowers. Today, she is 90 years of age and she still practices this art.

Another lady I know to be 81 but looking as if she is 68, has taken exercising very seriously. She has joined a lady's group where she keeps herself active.

I have been very much inspired seeing this woman so healthy and interested in life.

It is not to be taken lightly that exercise is a definite must and choosing a hobby or two, is a great bonus to growing older healthy and happy.

And Forget about having all the time you need cause you just do not know how much time you have – at your disposal, that is.

If your plan is to live to be 100, then you'd best start planning now. When John D. Rockefeller was 60 years old, for example, he made up his mind that he would live to be 100, so he compiled a plan to achieve that aim. His plan has become known as 'the ten commands of health'. His 10 were:

  1. Never lose interest in life or of the world.
  2. Eat sparingly and at regular hours.
  3. Get plenty of sleep.
  4. Take plenty of exercise, but not too much.
  5. Never allow yourself to become annoyed.
  6. Set a daily schedule and stick to it.
  7. Get a lot of sunlight.
  8. Drink as much milk as will agree with you.
  9. Obey your doctor and consult him / her often.
  10. Do not overdo things.

OK. OK. Rockefeller only made it to 97 but, even allowing for different medical opinions about one or two of his commands, you've got to concede that he realized what he set out to do, and his health lifestyle would certainly not have diminished him.

When it comes to time, keep in mind that we'll never have enough time because we do not know how much time we have. So, we need to resolve to do it (whatever 'it' is) now. People put on-hold trekking the Himalayas or climbing Kilimanjaro until they retire. Unless they have inside information, they may not make it to retirement and, even if they do, their artificial knee may make trekking a bit difficult. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was close to the mark when she said, 'It's only when we really know and understand that we have a limited time on earth – and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up, we will then begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had '.

Planning that you have something to look forward to and making the most of every moment are good advice. Learn from legendary football coach Vince Lombardi who said, 'We did not lose the game; we just ran out of time '.
