Age, experience, and wisdom are either not valued or not considered the province only of those who have lived long enough. It's like Ernest Hemingway observed, 'The error of youth is to believe that intelligence is a substitution for experience, while the error of age is to believe experience is a substitute for intelligence.

Since the 1960s people have talked about 'the generation gap', the difference in ideas, opinions, and behaviors that separates older from younger people. The divide may narrow or widen from time to time, but it's always there. Notwithstanding, there are some things that can be learnt only by living long enough, and one of those is wisdom: wisdom (should) come with age.

By the time we get to the point of our lives where anti-aging is of interest, most of us have some part of us that is broken.

Aging At The Speed Of Your Brain

So much of our behavior is dictated by our thoughts, and aging is no different. How do you think effects how we feel, and this influences how we move physically and how we interact in this world.

We all know the 80 year old who is young at heart, and the 50 year old who is mentally ready for the retirement home.

My dad was an active cyclist until leukemia took him at 83. Even right up until his diagnosis he pressed on doing his 50 km per day.

I used to laugh when he complained about some of the old riders, those in their 60's who could not keep up. When Dad was in hospital I asked him what had driven him to cycle for decades, and he simply said he loved it.

His passion for cycling kept him young physically and mentally, some of the women cyclists joked he had the best legs in the cycle group.

I'm now sixty and my passion is martial arts. I train daily and also with 2 groups. I train hard and it hurts later, but I love it, and when I train with a young 30 or 40 year old I feel just the same.

Aging is every bit a mental game as a physical game. If you mentally feel old then why would you exercise, why would you eat well, and why would you make the effort to go out and have fun or meet people.

Beware of labels, such as old, or decrepit, or aging, because words are very powerful, and they can help you or harm you.

A university study had two groups walk down a corridor and go into separate rooms. One group read a short story about youth and spring and happiness, the other group read a story about old age and winter and sadness.

The two groups left the building. The test was to measure how long each person took to walk into the building, and then how long to walk out.

Why Aging Is Like Superannuation

When you are 20 years old you are most likely quite uninterested in superannuation or anti-aging.

But let's say you are 50 years old and you do not have any super. Then you will need to make large deposits to have a decent retirement.

I recently turned 60 and even though I pride myself on being fit and health, partly because it's my job to do so, I realized I needed to make a few more changes. My goal is to be fit and well at 70 as I am at 60.

Even though I consider myself to be very healthy I know for a fact that my body can not process the foods a twenty something can and expect to remain well. Sugars, omega 6 industrial oils, junk food and more than a moderate serve of alcohol is going to hit me hard.

All of this from eating food which in real terms is just junk. Of course if I eat like that I will not have the energy to exercise and the couch will become my friend. Plus my mind will be dull and I will certainly increase my chances of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
