Types Of Drivers

Have you ever considered whether people live their lives the way they drive their cars? The jury is still out on answering that one, but if there is a relationship between them, I'll leave it to you to consider any implications.

Next time you're out 'n' about put your observation skills to the test and see whether or not you agree with those that I have identified.

I name one group 'Dozers'. They get their name from dozing-off at traffic lights. It's as if the color red invokes a strange power over them, putting them into a trance-like state. So powerful is this color that, when the light suddenly turns green, the Dozer just fits there as if spellbound. And continuous urging by other drivers hoping for some sign of action, the Dozer just sits there. And when he or she finally wakes up to the fact that others are becoming increasingly impatient, the light resumes its redness. Usually it's only the Dozer who makes it through in time.

Another group are what I call 'Bummers.' They earn their name from their practice of tailgating: they're particularly curious in Queensland. Bummers insist on driving so close that, when you look in the rearview mirror, another car appears to be in the back seat. And accelerating or breaking has little or no effect on the Bummer: they seem hell-bent on staying put. The only way you can rid yourself of them is to pull-over and let them pass.

'Colorblinds' are another type. They're usually males who confuse the colors red, orange, and green. Colorblinds can not be count-on to drive according to the color of the traffic lights. An orange light could result in acceleration to avoid stopping when the light changes to red, or it could mean stopping in preparation for a change to red. And their action this time does not mean that it will be repeated next time. Just because a light changes color, it can not be assumed that colorblinds will continue, accelerate, or stop.

'Frog-Kissers' get their name from the many fairy stories where someone must confront their fear by kissing the frog. The beautiful princess, for example, must kiss the frog if her Prince Charming is to materialize. Frog-Kissers behind the wheel can be a danger to themselves and to others. How they ever got a license to drive is a mystery. Their fear of driving is exceeded only by their determination to bring to life the joy that the advertisers pose as part of the driving experience.

'Staccatoes' are stop-starters who speed-up, slow-down, and stop-dead for no apparent reason. Just when you think it's safe to follow the car in front, its brake lights come on, indicating a slow-down. Not only does this happen without warning, there's seemingly no reason for this action. And when you decide to pass, true to their type, Stocatoes accelerate again-without warning, of course.

'WHOGAS'ers' are the scariest of all types. WHOGAS is an acronym for 'Who Gives AS ***. These drivers are the ones who cruise along, ostensibly without a care in the world. (As the saying goes: if they were any more relaxed, they'd be fly-blown.) They may even appear to be sleep behind the wheel: it seem as though they really do not give as ***. Their mantra seems to be, 'This car is helping me get from A to B. Nothing else matters'.

As you see by my descriptions, if people live their lives the way they drive, society could have problems. If your driving-type did not get a mention, how would you describe it?

Free Radicals – Why Free Radicals May Be The Silent But Deadly Killer In Our Bodies

Imagine that inside your body, there are a bunch of little monsters carrying hammers. And these monsters decide they do not like you, so they begin beating away at your DNA and cell membrane. Because of this, your cells are now damaged and this has opened the pathway for diseases. In essence, this is what free radicals do to our body. Instead of little monsters though, they are actually groups of atoms with an odd number of electrons. If you can recall from chemistry (one of my favorite subjects), electrons like to be in pairs. Whenever an atom has an unpaired electron, it goes crazy trying to find another electron to pair up with. Because these atoms often times can not find a free electron, they bounce around our body and damage our DNA and the cell membrane. Now one unpaired electron may not cause much damage, but what about a large number of them? To put it in perspective, imagine a 3 followed by 23 zeros. This is what it would look like:

300 million,000,000,000,000,000,000. It is believed that this is the number of free radicals an average person has in their body. Now, imagine that many atoms (three hundred sextillion) damaging our cells constantly.

You may be telling yourself, “Okay that's bad, but how do they get in my body?”

Lucky for you, all you have to do is follow these three simple tips, and I can ensure you will not have any free radicals! First, do not eat anything. Second, do not consume any liquid. And finally, do not breathe! Not as easy as it sounds right? The unfortunate truth is that whenever we eat, drink, or even breathe, our bodies take in pollution. This pollution comes from oxidation in the air such as when an engine rumors or fruit goes bad. And whenever we consume any food, or breathe in air, we are being exposed to this oxidation. That oxidation is the driving force behind free radicals being released in our body.

Now that we know what they are and how we get them, how can we stop them?

First, I should point out, that the free radical number is different in everyone. For example, the number increases for anyone who smokes or drinks regularly. So, all you have to do is exercise and eat healthy, right? WRONG. What's even more surprising is that people who exercise fortimes breathe heavy, and consume 10-20 times more oxygen than those who do not. Which means that those exercise receive more oxidation in their body and their number drastically increases.

If exercising does not help, then what does?

One way in which we can reduce the number of free radicals is to consume antioxidants. Antioxidants are typically found in foods such as dark chocolate, blueberries, cranberries, apples, black plums, black beans, etc. What is the problem with this? Well, for starters, antioxidants can only reduce free radicals on a one to one basis. This means that if you consume one antioxidant serving, you get rid of one free radical. Now, even if I consumed 100 servings of blueberries, would I even be making a dent in the free radical number? Unfortunately, the answer is no. If you take away 100 from three hundred sextillion, you basically still have three hundred sextillion. Lucky for us, there are alternative methods out there to decrease the number of free radicals we have! When utilizing these other methods, we are able to not only reduce the number, but we are able to keep our cells healthy, and possibly prevent diseases from coming into our body.

Many of us are trying to do the right things to lead healthy lives. We always wear our seat belts. We exercise regularly. We do not smoke and we try to eat healthy. In our modern world these things may not be enough. Many chemicals that we are exposed to everyday may increase our risk of cancer. Unfortunately, when chemicals are tested for safety they are tested by themselves. In today's world rarely is one chemical used by itself, rather they combine with many other chemicals. It is that chemical interaction that has many of us concerned. One toxin may harmless but regular does of many toxins may be another issue all together.

1. Eat organic when possible. The pesticides on or in the food you consume are stored in your fatty tissue and organs. Tender flesh fruit like strawberries require lots of pesticides because they are close to the ground.

2. Give up plastic water bottles and canned foods. Bisphenol A is found in many plastic water bottles, in some cling wraps and in the lining of many can goods. Ways to Know You’re Getting Older

If you're a senior citizen like me, you know what's coming when you hear or see the phrase `You know you're getting old when … 'How many times have you read or hear funny endings to that statement?

• You know you're getting old when you're the only one who knows how to use a rotary phone.
• You know you're getting old when happy hour is a nap.
• You know you're getting old when you feel like the morning after but you have not been anywhere.

Then there are the real, less funny responses. You know you're getting old when you wake up in the morning with aches and pains in most joints or when you have to pee a dozen times during the night. I've certainly felt old when I've forgotten where I've placed something … something basic like car or house keys, purse, library book, etc.

Do you find yourself joking about having a 'senior moment'? We may chuckle to mask the tiny sense of terror the lost object, forgotten name, or brain fart wreaks havoc on our psyche. But I think we all freeze in that moment realizing we're not as agile, physically or mentally, as we once were.

One of the last places I expected to feel old was at a recent 49ers game. My friend and I had traveled to San Francisco on a tour bus. We did not have to deal with traffic or parking – a true luxury in my opinion. In addition, we were being feted in one of the team suites, which provided food and drink and monitors to watch up close anything our bi-focaled eyes may have missed on the field.

I should mention that after having been to other games during my lifetime, I've always thought more of the actual game and play-by-play was to be viewed from the comfort of my living room. To experience the live event, however, is thrilling and not to be missed, if you get the chance. Seeing it live shows you what goes on during commercials, for instance, and what happens on the periphery of the actual play.

Well, folks, it's what happens on the periphery that made me feel old at this recent game. The noise level of the roaring fans alone was unsafe (especially for old people with hearing aides such as me) at 85dB for the entire 3+ hour game. In addition, on the sideline were:
• Cheering cheerleaders (okay, you could not really hear them, but they were distracting course, which added to general confusion)
• A group of 20 boisterous rally squad guys who screamed, jumped on railroads and seats through the stadium
• The 49er mascot
• A combo of at least 12 drummers on base drums moving around the stadium
• Another 7 guys on horns backing up the drummers
• All the camera / TV equipment and staff moving up and down the sideline following the movement of the players.
• Flag bearers who'd wave flags as big as a house on the sideline and then meet up for a celebration dance in the middle of the field after each touchdown
• All the staff related to the above participants: supervisors, technicians, facilitators, water boys, ball boys, linesmen, trainers, and other players

In addition, during the halftime there were at least two hundred other performers and different band participants who performed for the 35,000+ crowd. Where were they keeping all these folks before and after the half ???

And that was just 'down there,' on the field. Up in our suite, we had friends cheering and yelling conversations with other people in our group. There were also numerous TV monitors up on the walls of the suite, some showing the game we were viewing and others showing the SF Giants game, which I was also interested in. And if that was not enough, retired players such as Dwight Clark and others I did not recognize would make the round of suites to allow for autographs and picture taking. I have a bunch of pictures on my camera of ex-football players I have no clue who they might be.

Do I sound like I'm complaining? Well, I'm not. It was so much fun to have this experience. I was grateful that I was given this opportunity and that I was able to share it with friends. At the same time, however, it felt like it was too much; too much noise, too much to look at, too much to eat and drink, too much to do / see / hear / feel and just too much to take in.

In spite of being exhausted, near deaf, with blood-shot eyes and heartburn, I'll never forget this day. I'll never forget the smell of forbidden Polish dogs, the smile on the face of the young ticket-taker, the serious look of stadium security staff and the memories of being with friends for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

I say bring on more opportunities to feel old if it means I get to enjoy and complain about opportunities like this!

Must We Always Act Our Age?

George Burns said, “I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.”

Age is a state of mind. If that is true, must we always act our age? I do not think so! I recently was thrilled to celebrate my 65th birthday earlier this month. I celebrated by attending a workshop entitled “Aging as a Spiritual Practice.” I found out that our perceptions and our ways of thinking can age us faster than the clock.

Spirits are the true essence of who we are, not our bodies. Spirit is ageless, timeless and deathless. Yet we continuously remind ourselves and others that we are becoming more limited physically and / or mentally as time goes on. How many times have you said, as I have, “Oh, I forgot that because I'm having a senior moment,” or “I used to be able to do that longer … or faster … or better .. “? How often do we buy into a youthful society's message that says if you're over 30 you're not worth very much? We're the first people to limit ourselves by believing and integrating these attributions as we get older.

Yes, our bodies are flesh that does deteriorate over time, but there's nothing more limiting than saying stuff like “Oh, my legs hurt this morning when I got up. OR it may be because yesterday you were so thrilled it quit raining that you went for a 5 mile walk!

When a bunch of seniors get together, what's one of the first things they do? Compare medicines they're taking, or HMO's or recent aches and pains. They talk about fun stuff like babysitting grandkids followed quickly by, “Glad I'm not the parent of a youngster. I'm certainly guilty of focusing on the impact of an aging body. So, what to do? The Handbook of Religion and Health by Koenig, et al, indicates that people who have a regular religious attendance or practice live, on average, 7 years longer than those who do not. There are things we can do to make the best use of those extra years.

In my opinion, a spiritual practice can help in focusing on the more positive aspects of getting older. But it does take a little work. “Oh, no, I have to work?” C'mon people, if you're retired you can make a little time for yourself. It's nothing difficult or complicated. And, if you're not retired, do what you can. Listen to what you say about aging and the habits you're beginning to form about how old is a sink hole.

Two main ways I find that work for me are (1) meditating and (2) spending time with people who are older than I am. Gee, does not meditating work for everything !? It reinforces the ability to focus and stay sharp about what's really important in life – as opposed to the correct spelling of the anti-reflux medicine you're taking. The spiritual inquiry of spending time with people older than ourselves is a generous gift. It reinforces to them as our elders that we value their presence and it reminds us what to do or not to do as we age.

There's personally another thing I do to age spiritually and that's a few minutes of online games like Solitaire in the morning with my coffee. Okay, not exactly spiritual, but doing this means me to ads aimed at younger people and I like being up on what the younger generation is doing. Doing online games is also a process that keeps my brain darting about. I make sure the game is not so complicated that I never have a chance in heck of winning but not so easy that I know I must be ill if I do not win every game.

Lewis Richmond recently reminded us, “Every day and every day for the next twenty years, 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65.” Longevity trends coupled with this fact mean we'll have a lot of company. Personally, I'd rather listen to an oldster talk about how he met his wife 50 years ago than comparing swollen joints.

Certainly getting older with illness can be debilitating and difficult to rise above. I will try to deal with that if and when it happens. In the meantime, I will work to accept aging gracefully and not worry about whether I'm acting my age or not.
